Promoting Health and Preventing Chronic Disease - Healthy Lifestyles Matter!
Last evening I was given the privilege of speaking at the Canadian Diabetes Association Expo on the Top 10 Tips for Greater Health and Increased Vitality. Congratulations to event organizer Terri Young for the success of this year’s event. In Canada over the next 10 years deaths from Chronic Diseases will increase by 15% – most markedly, deaths from diabetes will increase by 44%! Chronic diseases are projected to account for 89% of all deaths in Canada and the costs to our economy, communities and families are staggering. Although the causes are complex, at least 80% of premature heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes, and 40% of cancer could be prevented through healthy lifestyles choices (healthy diet, regular physical activity and avoidance of tobacco products, managing stress, maintaining a healthy weight).
